4Women Charity Dinner, 4th February - Friends of Smyrna Home, Ooty, India:
The 4Women Charity Dinner took place on Saturday night at Sunningdale Village Hall, attended by 48 women of all ages (from 16 to nearly 80!). A delicious meal of chicken and vegetable curry was served before the team from Sunningdale, led by Sue Marchant, gave a very interesting interactive presentation about their visit last Summer to Smyrna Home and the many ways in which this charity supports its local community. This includes sponsoring a child's education, providing a hostel for girls who would otherwise be married at puberty, a programme to rebuild homes, providing a weekly hot meal to those in need and a free rehabilitation centre for those with mental and physical disabilities and debilitating conditions. Members of the Fuel Youth Group who took part in the trip shared their experiences. We were all stunned to hear how a contribution of as little as £10 a month could make such a difference - providing a child with not only with their education but also their school uniform and food.
